I find so many new sustainable and ethical brands every day, and I wanted to start showcasing some of my favorites on my blog. I’ve decided to post a sustainable spotlight each month to share a bit about my favorite brands at the moment. For my first spotlight ever I’ll be sharing Girlfriend Collective!
About the Brand
Girlfriend Collective was started to stray away from “fast fashion that strips the world of its resources and ends up in landfills.” They are dedicated to creating products that not only look good, but do good! Girlfriend Collective makes sure to use recycled fabrics while also creating products that are high quality and classic. This ensures that their products won’t cycle through you wardrobe in a mere few months.
Their factories are certified SA8000 (“a social accountability standard and certificate”) and “use zero forced or child labor, and always provide living wages and safe conditions.” They are also Bluesign® certified! This means that they “ensure high environmental safety and performance in five areas: consumer safety, resource productivity, water emissions, air emissions, and workplace health and safety.”
At the moment Girlfriend Collective is focusing on their leggings. They’re currently having a promotion where you can get your first pair free, and only have to pay for the shipping! This offer ends February 3rd, so I’d recommend acting fast. However stay tuned, because they will be releasing a new collection soon!
What is in their leggings? Girlfriend Collective is committed to researching the best fabrics for their products, and what they ended up with is “79% recycled micro polyester, 21% spandex, and 260 gsm.” Their “polyester yarn is made from 100% recycled post-consumer water bottles.” Want a little more info on the recycled materials or RPET that they use? You’ll like these few facts!
Benefits of RPET:
- 85% less energy than regular polyester
- 65% less sulfur dioxide than regular polyester
- 90% less water usage than regular polyester
- RPET fabric has a 50% lower carbon footprint than the organic cotton
- RPET polyester fabric has almost a 90% lower carbon footprint than nylon
Why I Love Them
I recently got my Girlfriend Collective leggings and I’m obsessed with them. They’re so comfortable, cute, and you can feel the quality. I’m always excited when I am able to find a brand that I love aesthetically and also agree with ethically. One of the things I love the most about Girlfriend Collective is how transparent they are with their supply chain and other aspects of their company.
The fashion industry is known for not sharing information about their supply chains, which makes it harder for people to understand where they’re clothing is coming from. If you check out the Girlfriend Collective website you can find information on their factory, their fabric, and their certificates. It’s refreshing to have all this information openly available, and it’s also interesting to read through it all.
I would definitely recommend checking out Girlfriend Collective (online or on Instagram) and even snagging one of those pairs of leggings by February 3rd. I’m sure you’ll love them and what they do as much as I do!
